Hello from Gallway Ireland - I was able to procure the 3 month passport yesterday in Dublin at the immigration office.  They are very kinbd and just want to be sure everyone is safe, and has travel insurance ect.  The weather is nice here in Gallway.  This area has waht are called "Gaeltchets" where the gaelic language of old Ireland is still spoken.  One of the things I want to do in my life is learn Gaelic and Welsh, so I may come here and study some time.  Tomorow I am going on a guided tour of the Burrens and then the next day I am going to the Arran Islands off the coast of West Ireland for 4 days.  The hostel here is nice, has alot of celtic, free internet and free breakfast.  This afternoon I am going to a pub to join in a local music sesson!

Hello again from Dublin - It is Monday morning in Dublin and I am on my way to the immigration office to explain my reasons for visiting Ireland and how I will pay for my visit in the hopes of getting my passport stamped 3 months instead of 28 days.  Last night I went out to the temple bar area with some travelers from Brazil and that was a kick.  There were musicians lining the streets and lots of cool gift shops.  Dublin is The capital of Ireland and the name is Gaelic for (dubh Lwyn) dark water.  It is a culturly diverse part of Ireland.  Walking down the street I hear many languages and dialects.  There are several universities and museums in the city, and in the Trinity College is the beautiful Book of Kells which is what is sometimes called an illuminated maunscript.  Made by monks it the 5th or 6th century, it is basically the new testiment of the Bible with the gospels represented in pictures by the monks.  Well out of time on the computer take care.  On Wednesday I am going to go west to a city called Gallway for a week.  Micah

Hello from Gelndaloch Ireland. I sailed to Rosslare Port in Ireland on the 15th from Fishgaurd Wales. The customs agents wanted to ask me some questions such as: Why are here? How are you paying for your trip? "I dont know what you've been told about Ireland, but htis is not the land of little leprichans. This is a real crime area and people get murdered and robbed" he told me. I was afraid they wouldn't let me in at first, but Im here now and thats good. I spent 3 nights in Wexford durring which time I rested and went to an Irish music session which I didn't play in this time. I practiced my whistle, visited an art center, read some books and had my first fish and chips. Wexford is a great city to relax in. There is alot to do and its not terribly hectic. This morning I took the train from Wexford to Wiklow and then a buss from there to Ashrord and then I hiked 10 miles to Glendaloch where I am now. It is an old monastery started by St Kevin long ago. I think in the 7th century. The monastery is in the middle of a forest and 2 lochs (lakes). There is a beutiful cemitary 11th century round tower and lots of nature. I shall be here for a few days and then I will hike to Dublin. Take care, Micah

Hello from Fishgaurd, Wales on a beautiful day.  I havent been near a computer for some time, because I have been hiking in the Breacon Beacons National Park.  I have been meeting alot of people in Wales.  One man and his son were visiting the park after sailing together, and we had a great time chatting it up into the early morning talking about camping and sports and things.  Yesterday I was held over in Carmarthen for the night while on my way to Fishgaurd, and met some locals who let me stay on a couch.  They even cooked dinner and everything.  It was great fun, and stayed up talking until almost 4 in the morning.  I hope you have a nice valentines day.  All the best.  Micah

Hello From Exeter England.  Two days ago I was in Bude, and decided to hike through the Dartmoor National Park.  Despite the rain, it was a great hike, and my rain proof gear kept me dry!  A moor is a type of habitat with low growing vegiatation and acidic soil.  There are many moors in Africa.  The Dartmoor has alot of heather which is not the easiest stuff to walk through.  The gentalman who operated the Backpackers Hostel in Bude was very helpful in finding places to stay in Moor.  I started my hike in Princetown and stayed a night in a little caffe that offered accomidation called the Fox Tor caffe, then hiked to a very small village called Bridgeport (about 6 miles) the hike took me through Iron Age settlements and even a small coniferous forest.  From Portsbridge the gentalman working at the YHA Hostel gave me a ride all the way into Exeter where I am this morning.  On the way we drove through a spectacular old English Oak Forest that was just amazing.

Exeter is a great city full of old medievil churches and Roman remians.  I took 2 free tours yesterday and learned alot about the history of this amazing city which was "the most important Roman city of ancient times", according to one lady I talked to.  There are many cathedrals of saints of all types Saxon, Celtic, Roman.  In all, the guide said there are over 90 registered churches here including mosks and synagoges.  Got to go.  Next stop Wales!

Hello from Bude England.  I got here yesterday.  The weather has been stormy, so I couldn't finsh the hike all the way from Padstow to Bude.  I am at a nice hoostel here rtun by a family, and the re are alot of surfers in Bude.  I have no roomates at the time.  There are people here from Mexico and parts of the UK, alot of Austrialian accents.  In Tintagel a few days ago I went to an Arthurian Center that was designed by a man who made quite a bit of money selling powdered instant custard.  He started the center after WW1 in hopes of creating peace.  It was filled with beuautifull stained glass windows depicting some of the crests of the some of the knights of the rtound table.  I got a coppy of Mark Twains "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court".  I am reading that along with a book written sometime around the 13th century by Geffory of Monmouth "A History of the kings of Brittan" which is a ficticious account of the history of Brittan orrginally wrtitten in Latin.  I have decided to change my travel plans a little and instead of going to Bristol, which is a big city in southern England in the Devon district, I am going to spend the time in the Breacon Beacon area of Wales before sailing to Ireland on Valentines Day.  I remember hearing that Breacon Beacons got its name from the Beacon fires that the Brittans used to lite on top of the Mountain to warn other  Brittans of the encroaching English.  The pictures below are from Tintagel Castle in TIntagel.  Tintagel comes from the Cornish words "Din Tagel" which means something along the lines of "fortress of the narrow intrance"  Probably because of its being precariously built on a headland (a rock portruding out into the ocean) with only a narrow bridge and path leading to the gate.  In old times it was a major port of trading for Cornish Tin and spices from the east brought in on ships which docked along the Eastern Side of the headland.

Hello from Tintagel, and happy Valentines day.  I have been hiking for a week and have not been able to find computer access until now.  I have hikedalong the North coast of Cornwall in South Western England from Lands End to Padstow, about 60 miles.  It took me 7 days, and it has been so much fun.  I hope to do it again some day.  Yesterday the weather got stormy so I opted to take the bus from Padstow to Tintagel rather than walk.  Tintagel is famous in the Arturian tales for being the place were King Arthur was conceived by Uther Pendragon and Igrane with the help of Merlin the Magiacian.  The castle which I am going to go see in a minute is actually not the medievil castle from the legend but sits where it would have.  The castle ruins there today are from a certain Duke of Cornwall built in the 13th century.  The Bed and Breakfast where I am staying is from the 14th century, so its older than the United States of America!  Happy Valentines Day!
